Work

The state pays for work you do with your own hands. Right now it runs as a test: your work is measured and priced every minute, and you see what it would have paid, but nothing is paid yet. The test checks the numbers against real play before money flows. Real pay starts later; see Coming soon.

What counts

Every kind of work below needs its licence: without it, the work is stopped (or, for mobs, the state keeps the drops) and nothing is measured.

In survival mode, in the Overworld, the Nether and the End:

WorkCounts as
Felling trees (logs)Forestry
Digging dirt, sand, gravel, clay, snow…Excavation
Mining stone, deepslate, andesite, terracotta…Quarrying
Mining ores, ancient debris, amethystMining
Harvesting fully grown crops, melons, pumpkins, sugar cane, bamboo, cactus, berries; killing animalsAgriculture
Catching fishFishing
Killing hostile mobsHunting
Anything above, done in the NetherNether Extraction
Anything above, done in the EndEnd Operations

What doesn't

  • Blocks that didn't grow there: anything placed by a player, moved by a piston, made by water and lava (cobblestone generators, concrete) or landed as a falling block. Breaking it is fine; it just isn't work.
  • Unripe crops, and blocks broken with a tool that gets nothing out of them.
  • Mobs from spawners, eggs or commands, and kills you didn't finish yourself: fall, lava, drowning or crushing traps. The last hit has to be your own weapon or your own arrow, or the fire they lit (Fire Aspect, Flame).
  • Work without moving. If you haven't moved or looked around for 3 minutes, nothing counts.
  • Clicking machines. If your clicks come at a near-constant rhythm while your aim never moves, for 10 minutes running, the pay is held for an admin to look at. Nobody is punished automatically.

Automating production is fine; it just produces items, not money.

How a minute is priced

Every kind of work is measured in standard seconds: how long a player with iron tools needs for it. Breaking stone is half a standard second, a fish 21, a zombie 10½. Work faster than that and you earn more per minute.

A minute of your work pays:

₡480 per standard hour (₡8 a standard minute) × season × appetite, minus the income tax.

  • Season: each kind of work has its own slow swing in demand, drawn every hour from a published random number, so nobody can rig it. The board shows it as slump, falling, steady, rising or boom, with an arrow for the last hour.
  • Appetite: how much the state still wants of that work. It runs down while the server does a lot of it and refills over a couple of hours. Spreading out pays.
  • Income tax: 10 % on the first ₡1,400 earned in a week (Monday to Sunday, London time), more above that. The test numbers already take it off.

The state also has a daily limit on how much it pays out in total, split fairly between players. With normal play nobody reaches it.

Where to see it

  • The action bar after each minute of work: "Test pay: ₡9.07 for Quarrying (not paid)".
  • /labour (or /work, /jobs): the labour board. What each kind of work pays right now, its season and appetite, and how many people did it in the last hour; click one to see why. Your day so far is at the bottom.
  • /labour receipts: your work log, one item per hour of the last 7 days: what you did, for how long, and what it would have paid. Click an hour for the full count.
  • When do I get paid? When the exchange opens for real, after the test and the licence exams; the date will be announced. Test pay is never paid out.
